  • More than 260,000 pets find homes as a result of International Program
More than a quarter-million animals will now have a happier new year, as a result of the international Home 4 The Holidays adoption campaign, sponsored by PETCO Animals Supplies, Inc., The Iams Company, PETCO Foundation and Helen Woodward Animal Center.

According to Helen Woodward Animal Center, creators of the event that began in San Diego in 1999, approximately 261,839 animals were adopted during the drive. The event ran from November 10 to January 4, and actress Diane Keaton once again served as celebrity spokesperson for the campaign.

"Each year, more and more people choose to give the gift of life by adopting shelter animals," Mike Arms, President of Helen Woodward and founder of the program, said. "This year, with 1,316 adoption centers participating worldwide, Home 4 The Holidays shattered last year's total of 180,000 adoptions, and exceeded our stated goal of 200,000 animals in homes for this campaign."

Petfinder.com, the nation's largest online database of adoptable animals, joined the campaign for the second year, helping to broaden the number of participating shelters.

"This is simply a tremendous success," Petfinder.com President Betsy Saul said. "As more attention is given to shelter animals, clearly more people are realizing that they can find a loving family pet, who will provide a lifetime of devoted companionship, right in their own neighborhoods."

PETCO Foundation Director Paul Jolly agreed.

"We are constantly amazed at the growth and continued success of this annual campaign," Jolly said. "We can only hope that the attention and publicity given the program will translate into year-round increases in adoptions at all shelters."

In an effort to encourage adoptions, PETCO offers adoption gift booklets to new pet parents to help them get started with all the supplies and services their new family member requires. As part of the gift booklet, The Iams Company provided a free meal of Iams or Eukanuba to each adopted pet. The sponsors are committed to ensuring that the pets stay in their new homes for a lifetime of holiday seasons. In and effort to provide support to the new pet families, The Iams Company provided them with a New Dog or New Cat Careguide as well as access to an online new pet owner care center, email updates with advice on raising a happy, healthy pet, and continuing education on their pet's breed, life stage and lifestyle.

"The Iams Company is proud of its partnership with Helen Woodward Animal Center, PETCO, the PETCO Foundation and shelters throughout the world," said Amy Newkirk, Marketing Manager for Iams. "We're glad to be there as these families take their new pets not only Home 4 the Holidays, but home for life."

"Home 4 The Holidays is only possible because of our partners: PETCO, Iams and the PETCO Foundation," Arms said. "Many of the participating shelters and rescue groups operate on tight budgets, and our partners make this all possible by putting their money where it really counts."

More than 1,300 rescue groups and animal shelters took part in this year's Home 4 The Holidays campaign. Since its inception in 1999, Home 4 The Holidays has accounted for more than 565,000 pet adoptions.

PETCO is a leading specialty retailer of premium pet food and supplies. It operates more than 650 neighborhood stores in 43 states and the District of Columbia, as well as a leading destination for on-line pet food and supplies at www.petco.com. The PETCO Foundation, PETCO's non-profit organization, has raised more than $15 million since inception in 1999 and offered assistance to more than 1,900 non-profit grassroots animal welfare organizations from around the nation.

For more than 50 years, The Iams Company has enhanced the well being of dogs and cats by providing world-class quality foods. Helen Woodward Animal Center is a private, non-profit organization where "people help animals and animals help people". Will he curl up next to you to keep you warm on a cold December night and keep the bad guys-real or imagined-away? Is he truly part of your family? No? Then he can't be Man's Best Friend!"

  • Annual list of top 10 most popular pet names
Most people like to think of their pets as members of the family, and they demonstrate it by giving them human names. Pet owners don't usually get too creative, according to new research released today by Veterinary Pet Insurance .

After conducting a thorough review of its policyholder records, VPI, the country's oldest and largest health insurance plan for pets, found that the most common pet name is Max. It ranks number one for male dogs, cats and birds.

"Unlike human children's names, which can become popular choices based on famous actors or athletes at the time, pet names appear to be fairly consistent," explains Dr. Aine McCarthy, director of Veterinary Services at VPI. "Of course, having a common name doesn't keep your pets from being very special to us."

Following are the top 10 pet names of 2003, based on VPI's 360,000 policyholders:
    1. Max
    2. Bailey
    3. Buddy
    4. Molly
    5. Maggie
    6. Jake
    7. Lucy
    8. Daisy
    9. Rocky
    10. Sadie
Other common names among VPI client's pets are Buddy, which appears in the top 10 list for male dogs, cats, birds and reptiles, and Lucy, which is the most popular female exotic (rabbits, guinea pigs, etc.) name and appears in the top 10 list of female dogs, cats, birds and reptiles.

  • Dog lovers don red and black ribbons for breed ban awareness campaign
The National Animal Interest Alliance urges dog lovers everywhere to wear red and black ribbons to show support for responsible dog ownership and opposition to Germany's breed bans and restrictions.

Citing dog training as a key element of responsible dog ownership and the sensible alternative to breed-specific laws, NAIA extends the red-and-black ribbon solidarity campaign to cities and towns all over America, especially where breed-specific bans have been proposed or already passed into law.

"Previous European breed bans aroused the apprehension of some American dog owners, but it took the recent breed extermination crisis in Germany to sound the global alarm that many breeds could be a simple pen-stroke away from official banishment," said Patti Strand, NAIA president. American Staffordshire Terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, Bull Terriers, American Pit Bull Terriers, and similar breeds are current targets for these laws. But American Bulldogs, Chows, Rottweilers, Akitas, German Shepherds, and others are singled out with increasing frequency. In the current reactive atmosphere in Germany, more than 40 breeds are threatened.

According to Strand, "Responsible dog ownership and reasonable, enforceable laws, not draconian prohibitions, are the keys to preventing tragedies like the ones that precipitated the spate of anti-dog laws in Germany. Breed-specific laws fail because they do not take into consideration the reality that any dog, regardless of its physical characteristics, must be raised, trained and socialized properly to become a good pet and canine good citizen. Breed bans undermine responsible dog ownership by diverting attention from the real issue, which is the need for dog owners to educate themselves about their dogs' behavioral needs and to provide socialization and training consistent with those needs. Dog owners who understand this produce good dogs regardless of the breed or mix."

Therefore, instead of passing unfair, ineffective laws, NAIA advocates developing animal control programs that encourage dog owners to properly socialize, train, and care for their dogs, so that they can become good canine citizens and remain prominent members of the cultural landscape.

NAIA applauds those groups and individuals that have been successful in promoting reasonable laws and challenges dog owners everywhere to merge into a larger effort to defeat or overturn breed-specific laws and to focus their attention on public education and on regulations that hold owners accountable for the behavior of their dogs, whether purebred or mixed. NAIA asks communities to judge dogs by their deeds rather than their appearance.

Hundreds or thousands or tens of thousands of red-and-black ribbons will unite dog fanciers in this cause and help spread the word that breed-specific laws are ineffective, unfair, costly, and counterproductive in building successful animal control programs.

Although breed-specific legislation refers to dogs, all animal owners are in jeopardy when animals are regulated or banned based on misinformation, political expediency, and fear. Clubs, organizations, and individuals can spread the word about responsible ownership by wearing a red-and-black ribbon, fashioning ribbons to distribute at their events, and talking to friends, neighbors, and acquaintances about owner education and accountability.

To add your organization or your personal endorsement to this campaign click on the icon below and sign up! To encourage others to join the campaign, place the red-and-black ribbon graphic on your website as a link to our website and we'll carry your message of responsible dog ownership to the American public.
