Find a friend for life - Adopt a pet

Make a friend for life by joining the Champaign County Humane Society for its Summer Adopt-A-Thon, August 16 to 18 at 1911 E. Main St., Urbana. More than 200 dogs, cats, puppies, kittens, guinea pigs and rabbits are available for adoption, and the Humane Society is open for special extended hours - from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Pictures of adoptable pets can also be found at Wal-mart in Champaign, Savoy and Rantoul and on-line at cuhumane.org or petfinder.org.

"Everyone is invited to the Adopt-A-Thon. It's a great opportunity to meet the pets and to make a difference in their lives by donating a gift from their wish list" says Executive Director Stephen J. Notaro, Ph.D. "This is your chance to make a difference for these homeless pets and to find a friend for life at the same time."

Already have a pet? Not looking for a furry family member? You can still make a pet's wish come true by donating much-needed supplies. This year the homeless pets at the Humane Society have lots of things on their special wish list, including Iams, Science Diet or Friskies pet food (both canned and dry), washable cat and dog toys, paper towels, unflavored Pedialyte, cotton swabs, non-clumping cat litter, and towels (new or gently used).

The Humane Society adoption process includes application approval and a one-day waiting period before a pet can be taken home. Adoption fees are $55 for cats and kittens and $65 for dogs and puppies. The adoption fee includes a microchip, collar and ID tag and most vaccinations. Founded in 1951, the Champaign County Humane Society is a private not-for-profit organization.

The Humane Society strives to prevent cruelty to animals, to promote animal welfare, and to educate the public about the humane care and treatment of animals. The Humane Society is open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Call 344-7297 for more information. For more information, see natural pet foods .
