Survey findings point to need for pet initiatives
Based on findings gathered in its State of the
American Pet survey, the Healthy Pets 21 Consortium a think tank of some of the
foremost leaders in the pet health and welfare communities initiated by the Purina Pet
Institute has set its pet agenda for U.S. pet and pet owners.
The Consortiums mission is to champion improved health and well-being for
our countrys dogs and cats, and the quality of their relationships with people, says Kati
Fritz-Jung, executive director of the Purina Pet Institute. The survey results helped to
provide the Consortium with a snapshot of what todays pet owner is experiencing.
Findings affirmed established knowledge, but provided surprises as well in the
areas of pet health, behavior and welfare.
We found some significant gaps between what was pet owners' perceptions and
what was reality, says Fritz-Jung.
Pet owners describe their pets as healthy, yet, when probed further, cite multiple issues. Similarly, owners say their pets are well behaved, but list multiple, and
unresolved, behavior issues.
Finally, through owners cite pet overpopulation as their greatest concern for pets, 25 percent of owners have failed to spay or neuter their pets a
significant step in helping the pet overpopulation problem.
To help pets and pet owners, the Healthy Pets 21 Consortium has outlined its pet
agenda focusing on pet health, behavior and welfare. It will employ research, education
and public policy to:
Promote responsible pet ownership;
Raise awareness of issues and advances in pet health, behavior and well-being;
Communicate the benefits of relationship between people and companion
animals; and
Promote a more pet-friendly society.
